OpenDNS The Largest DNS Provider

OpenDNS is the largest recursive DNS provider and Neustar is the largest authoritative DNS provider. These two are now working together on a new joint project called DNS Real-Time Directory that allows the updating of the DNS in near real time. The concept was born when they identified the need for a better process for updating the DNS. The old process limits businesses that maintain their own DNS records with the “time to live” delays encountered before DNS records cached at ISPs are updated. For us DNS Real-Time Directory means OpenDNS is now not only the largest DNS provider, but also the most up-to-date. Yet more reinforcement to use OpenDNS for your business. I use it, and I’m totally pumped about this new advancement. This means we could literally go from registering a new website, to launch in a matter of minuets, or move to new servers with little to no trouble.

NEVER GIVE YOUR EMAIL TO ANYONE. lol, But that doesn’t help us get it out there for real people does it?

I recently became aware of this problem; with all the Twitterer’s of the world wildly posting their e-mail everywhere all willy-nilly, their email addresses are subject to the harvesting by robots. Robots crawl websites like twitter (and yes they even crawl my site) so sooner or later you’ll wind up on a spammer list.

We all got caught up in the E-mail sharing twitter storm trying to get Google Wave invites.

So what’s the best way to protect yourself? I found a little website called Scrim (http://scr.im/) There is NO registration required, (nice) all you do is type in your e-mail address, and it generates a tiny URL like this one http://scr.im/811 and anyone who clicks on it is asked to verify that they are human, after which your e-mail is displayed!

And to anyone who was thinking “I just put email [A T] whereever {dot} com” – Well the bots have been wise to this for a long time, and it only fools the simplest of spam bots, they have long been trained beyond that old trick….

Virus Total is a free online service that helps discover new virsus by making it easy to submit files for analysis and see if your antivirus engine is effectivly protecting you.

Submitting files to be examined by antivirus companies can be a chore, even if you know how.
Sometimes you have to zip the file, password the archive, and e-mail, just to find it was too large, so you start over, zip the file, span the archive (didn’t forget to password it too right?) E-mail the files one at a time and hope they can put it back together.

Enter Virus Total. they have a webform to submit files and a nifty little uploader that does all the work for you! It’s so easy the best way to see how it works is to just submit a file yourself and see what happens. You get to see results in realtime so there’s no waiting. Just goto their website and follow the simple instructions. I find them very usefull during those “questionable downloads” that we run into from time to time.
